Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has called on captain Michael Carrick to cast an eye over the club’s midfield targets this summer, Metro.co.uk can reveal. The 36-year-old is set to join Mourinho’s backroom team at the end of the season when he will hang up his boots after 12 years at Old Trafford. United want at least one midfielder to cover the loss of Carrick and could need a second if Marouane Fellaini decides against signing a new deal before his current contract expires in the summer. Mourinho has a great relationship with Carrick and trusts the veteran enough to give him an influential voice on the club’s summer transfer decisions. Metro.co.uk understands United are interested in signing Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Napoli ace Jorginho.
Mourinho’s reliance on Carrick is only set to increase in the coming months when he becomes a first-team coach and the midfielder could lend a helping hand to the club’s U23s next season to act as a bridge between the first team and the academy. The likes of Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes could feature in Mourinho’s matchday squad for their final Premier League game of the season against Watford on Sunday. Mourinho is expected to rotate his side with United’s FA Cup final clash against Chelsea coming just six days later at Wembley.
