Gylfi Sigurdsson has revealed that he is currently making good enough progress in his recovery from a knee injury.

Gylfi Sigurdsson suffered the setback in a Premier League fixture with Brighton, and the Iceland international faces a race against time to be fit for this summer’s World Cup.

However, the playmaker has suggested that he is optimistic about his rehabilitation ahead of being reassessed next week.

The 28-year-old told the club’s official website: “It is going well and I am steadily making progress each day. I have not had any setbacks, I am off the crutches and out of the brace and almost back to walking normally.

“I have to get through a lot of exercises with the physios and on the machines – and the hands-on treatment as well. Then there is work in the pool and in the gym. Everything I have been doing is helping me a lot and I am feeling the benefit of it. The medical team have been really good and kept me busy in the past few weeks, they want to get the work in.

“We have been working on getting the swelling down and the fluid out of the knee – and getting some movement back into the knee. I am seeing the specialist in London next Tuesday and he will reassess me – and we will take it from there.”

Arsenal have been handed a boost after striker Alexandre Lacazette made a return to training.

Alexandre Lacazette was forced to undergo knee surgery last month, with it being suggested that the forward would be sidelined for around six weeks.

The French international is nearing the end of that six-week timeframe, but the 26-year-old has been pictured at the North London outfit’s training ground.

In Lacazette’s absence Arsenal have been limited to only one senior striker available for the Europa League, Danny Welbeck, but Arsene Wenger will be encouraged to see the former Lyon forward back on the training pitch well ahead of next Thursday’s quarter-final first leg against CSKA Moscow.

Lacazette was among a clutch of the Arsenal squad not way with their international teams who trained this morning at London Colney, including Aaron Ramsey.

Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick in last week’s 6-0 win over China, but was unable to get on the scoresheet as the Dragons succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay on Monday.

The forward struggled to make a constant impact against the South Americans, but Giggs has moved to defend his key man.

After the match, Giggs told reporters: “The pitch had a big part to play in it as it wasn’t ideal for dribbling or sticking the pass in.

“When Gareth gets the ball of course he is going to have players around him, they’re not just going to let him get it.

“They recognise the quality he’s got and make it difficult for him. But I thought he was a threat all night.”

Italy veteran defender, Leonardo Bonucci has charged the Azzurri to learn from England, as they look to climb back to the top.

England and Italy put up unfavorable displays at the last World Cup in Brazil, crashing out at the group stages.

The Three Lions are back in Russia for the 2018 World Cup, but Italy failed to qualify for the showpiece event.

Bonucci will be in the squad to face England in a friendly match in Wembley on Tuesday, and he wants Italy to learn from the young Three Lions.

“We all need to understand Italy starts… not from zero, but not very far from zero,” Bonucci told reporters in Monday’s press conference, speaking as one of the elder statesmen in a team that since that qualifying disappointment has received an injection of new blood under interim coach Luigi Di Biagio.

“We need to let these young players grow and hopefully they’ll take us back to the Italy we’re used to.

“England have managed to go through transition while still qualifying. England have a group of young players with lots of experience. Our young players don’t have that experience.

“There’s no point looking back. We should look forward. We have a team with not much international experience. You can’t compare our younger players to the English ones.”

Following the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), President Buhari Monday signed two instruments namely:

The Instrument of Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Government of the Republic of Singapore for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income and Capital Gains.

The other was the Instrument of Ratification of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the Swiss Federal Council and the International Development Association on the Return, Monitoring and Management of Illegally-Acquired Assets Confiscated by Switzerland and to be Restituted to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

With the execution of these instruments, Nigeria’s trade relations with Singapore and income therefrom are expected to rise, while the return of illegal assets will not only boost the administration’s anti-corruption drive, but also provide additional funds for critical infrastructure.

Hadi Sirika, the Minister of State for Aviation has disclosed that personnel of Aviation Security (AVSEC), a department in the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will soon begin to carry firearms across all the airports in the country.

Sirika explained that allowing AVSEC personnel to carry arms in the course of their duties would further reduce security threats across at the airports. Sirika spoke at the ongoing AVSEC retreat in Katsina State.

The minister, who was represented at the occasion by the Rector, Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Capt Mohammed Abdulsalami said discussions had reached the final stage for the plan to come into effect. He said:

“The Federal government approved for AVSEC to bear arms, which is a notable achievement in this administration’s effort at improving the general safety of its citizenry and passengers passing through our airports.”

He emphasized that arming AVSEC would ensure proper policing of the sector by AVSEC personnel, noting that it was part of efforts by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to give the country dividends of democracy.

He said rebranding of AVSEC personnel was important in the building of brand identity and creation of a recognizable corporate identity for officers with the aim of making them much more professional and customer friendly to meet up with the initiative of the Ease of Doing Business.

Sirika said most countries had shown a keen interest in the country’s growing and expanding aviation industry. Sirika had in September last year disclosed that AVSEC personnel will begin to carry arms while on duty at the nation’s various airports. He said approval to carry fire arms had been given to FAAN security personnel over a decade ago by the presidency. He however noted that the approval had not been actualised due to operational exigencies. “We have gone far with the profiling of those to pioneer the project. In addition, requisite logistics have been identified and articulated. “All arrangement has reached an advance stage. As to the issue of time, let us just say very soon, we have so much to tidy up and would like to be highly professional in our preparations before execution”, he had said.

Also, the Managing Director of FAAN, Engr. Saleh Dunoma in his goodwill message, said the agency was investing in aviation to create enabling environment that would encourage efficiency in tackling emerging security threats to civil aviation. Dunoma disclosed that FAAN recently procured 10 additional patrol vehicles to boost the current fleet of vehicles for effective coverage and patrol, while additional screening machines were being procured and old ones being replaced.

Director, Security Services, FAAN, Capt USA Sadiq, in his speech observed that the industry was at a critical juncture in the global aviation industry where terrorism was assuming a new dimension. He said aviation security remained pivotal in the actualisation of a safe and secured aviation industry in the war against terrorism. Capt Sadiq stressed the need to close the gap created by the anomaly to adequately deploy all physical and material resources to augment in areas of lapses. He noted that securing the airport with the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera and detection equipment would enhance the function of AVSEC.

One of the world’s richest man, Bill Gates, has spoken out on why he tackled the economic policies being administered by the current government of Nigeria.

While speaking in an exclusive interview with the CNN, American billionaire businessman, Bill Gates, on Monday, criticised the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) said that the Federal Government’s investment in education and health was not good enough.

The Co-chairman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said he spoke out to implore Nigerian politicians to focus on human capital and its large youth population.

“The current quality and quantity of investment in this young generation in health and education just isn’t good enough. So, I was very direct,” he told CNN.

“While it may be easier to be polite, it’s more important to face facts so that you can make progress,” the philanthropist said.

Recall that the philanthropist had at a special session of the National Economic Council, on Thursday said, said Nigeria would do better with strong investments in health and education, rather than concentrate on physical infrastructure to the detriment of human capital development.

He had said, “Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth, with the fourth worst maternal mortality rate in the world ahead of only Sierra Leone, Central African Republic and Chad. One in three Nigerian children is chronically malnourished.

“In upper middle-income countries, the average life expectancy is 75 years. In lower middle-income countries, it’s 68; in low-income countries, it’s 62. In Nigeria, it is lower still, just 53 years.

“The Nigerian government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan identifies investing in the people as one of three strategic objectives. But the execution priorities don’t fully reflect people’s needs, prioritising physical capital over human capital.

“People without roads, ports and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.”
